Why is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Important?

The digital marketing landscape is shifting dramatically. Gartner has predicted a 25% drop in website traffic in 2025 due to AI. With Google’s AI Answers appearing in close to 80% of all searches people aren’t going to as many websites as they used to. And with ChatGPT’s popularity soaring, now is the time to start learning and optimizing for AI.

Isn’t Generative Engine and Search Engine Optimization basically the same?

No. But some of the optimization techniques will be similar, at least in the short term.

The fundamental difference is that LLMs like ChatGPT are not search engines, they are more like personal assistants. And like any good human personal assistant, an LLM can get to know its user and make recommendations based on what it sees, hears, and learns. This means that in some cases a user will not need to “search” to get a solution. In many cases an LLM may anticipate what a user needs and make a suggestion.

This also means that optimizing for LLMs requires strategies that might look more like equipping a personal assistant with detailed information about how a business operates, how it is unique, and what customers have to say about it.

Traditional SEO has always been about targeting a user’s intent when they ask a question in Google and providing a well-optimized web page in response. GEO is more about curating and distributing an in-depth “brand library” that can be utilized by LLMs.
